The Fellowship in HIV Medicine is a postgraduate level training programme which offers quality training for doctors in HIV care, and an opportunity to develop HIV clinical services in their hospitals. The course combines clinical contact programmes with distance learning and project work. Originally developed at the Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC), the Fellowship training is now conducted by a network of partner institutions in different parts of the country.

The Fellowship course (including the educational materials, assessment and evaluation methods and the protocols for development and management) has been designed, developed and evaluated by CMC with assistance from the Open University, UK. CMC began offering this course in 2002-03 in collaboration with the Population Council, with funding support from the European Union. In the five years of the course that have been completed, almost all students (96%) have graduated in the final theory and practical examinations and a range of HIV/AIDS care services have been developed in the participating hospitals through project work.

From 2006-07, two more premier medical colleges, the Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi and the School of Tropical Medicine & Medical College, Kolkata are participating with CMC as a network making the Fellowship available widely at all these three institutions.

Currently 37 students are undergoing FHM training in 2009.

The course is of one year duration, consisting of four contact sessions (6 weeks in total) at the training institution, supervised distance learning (4 months) and project work in the institutions of the trainees (6 months).
